Have you
ever hidden a gift so well that even you couldn't find it when
it was time to wrap presents? Last summer, I bought a video game for
my daughters that I planned to give them this Christmas but,
when I decided to wrap a few things early, the game
was nowhere to be found. Thankfully, it turned up the day before
I wrote this organizing tip (tucked behind the lawn mower in our
garage).
Determined
not to lose another present, I decided to wrap gifts as I bought
them instead of trying to hide them from my children. If you are
interested in doing the same, here's the "wrap" on keeping track
of gifts at Christmas.
-
Have
each person in your family select their favorite pattern of
Christmas paper and buy as many rolls as you think you will
need to wrap each person's gifts. If you have two children
and a gift is for both of them to open, let them know this
by wrapping half of the gift in each child's pattern of
paper.

Note:
Purchase a separate style of paper for gifts that will go to
friends and extended family members. Consider placing these
gifts in a separate space. Because we have two trees in our
home, I place gifts for our immediate family under the tree
in our formal living room and store presents for friends and
extended family under a smaller tree in the family room.
-
Number
each gift and write the number in the upper right-hand
corner or another easy-to-find spot on the package.
Note
1: This will allow you to control the order in which gifts
are opened (so the Nintendo DS is opened before the game for
the DS is unwrapped, etc.).
Note
2: Assign the same number to gifts that you want your
children to open at the same time (because they are the same
item or similar in size or value).
-
For
each child, record the number and a description of the gift
on a sheet of paper so you can refer back to it whenever you
forget what you bought them.
Hiding a
sheet of paper is an easier and more organized approach to
keeping kids from discovering (and you from losing) gifts this
Christmas. Although staying organized is always in season, may
we never forget that Jesus is the reason for all of them as we
celebrate our Savior's birth and savor this special time with
family and friends.
