Our home
gym has evolved over time. During the five years we
spent in an apartment, it consisted of an
exercise step and a
handful of
workout videos.
After moving into our first home, we invested in a treadmill and
a weight set. Recently, we added an
indoor cycling bike.
For tips
on setting up your own workout space, follow the steps below:
-
Define
your space to make it a place that family members want to
spend time in.
One of
the first things we did to our unfinished basement after we
moved in was hang fabric to separate the living space from
storage areas. We also purchased inexpensive carpet from
Home Depot to make the area even more inviting.

-
Decide
how you will use your space.
We placed the equipment in the
back of the room and left an open space for yoga and other
floor exercises. I added
a shelf near the indoor bike to hold a water bottle, the
remote control, tissues, towels, and books I might want to
skim during warm ups.

-
Do
something to eliminate irritations and make your workouts as
enjoyable as possible.
To
eliminate boredom, I record my favorite programs and watch
them during workouts. Because I find yoga and pilates
particularly mind-numbing, I play them on a small, older
television. This frees up our newer TV to watch the Today
show or another program.

As you set
up your own home gym, always be on the lookout for ways to make
it more effective as you put every system to the test until the
good is better and the better is best.
