"One Thing
Leads to Another" is not just the name of a song by The Fix.
It's also an organizing fact that is based upon the following
principle: If you do the first thing, and the next thing,
eventually everything will get done. Read on for an
example of how.
One
Thing
...
While
flipping through a magazine, I saw an advertisement for reusable
chord ties from the Container Store. A few days
later, I decided to stop and buy a pack while I was running errands.
When I got
home, I used the new ties to corral a camera cable that was
taking up too much space in a drawer. Completing this simple
task motivated me to
reorganize the entire drawer as I removed chords for a cell
phone I no longer used and rearranged other items until enough
space was freed up to store our video recorder and camera, which
up until this point had no permanent home.

On a role, I
decided to tackle the drawer
that contained power chords for our laptop and video
recorder.

Seeing
the inside of my desk look so great prompted me to complete
one more task as I cleared off the top. The fifteen minutes
I spent processing paper and putting
miscellaneous items away. was worth it when the clean
surface beckoned my oldest daughter to sit down and do her
homework.

As you
can see from this example, when we do the first thing and
the next thing, eventually everything (including homework) will get done as ...
1 organizing product +
1
idea on how to use it +
1 minute to get started = 1 clear formula for
building momentum.
